ARML: be prepared for hot weather!

Hi everyone,

A quick reminder to be aware of the weather in Las Vegas. The forecast in Las Vegas calls for temperatures of up to 110 degrees during ARML. Wear appropriate clothing for the heat, and make sure that you stay hydrated -- bring a water bottle and refill it frequently during ARML.

ARML Bus Information

Hi everyone,

This is important information about the ARML bus. (If you're flying to ARML, feel free to disregard this email.)

The bus will load at the San Jose Diridon (Caltrain) Station. Once you're there, look for bus loading spot #3 near the entrance to the train station. Here's a map: https://math.berkeley.edu/~moorxu/2016ARML/documents/busmap.png The spot labeled X1 is our bus loading location. Please do not park in the parking spots labeled "Caltrain Employee Parking", marked on the map with yellow and black X's. If needed, you can stop briefly in the parking lot labeled X2 on the map to unload. If you have trouble finding the bus, please call me at 541-206-7651.

All students should arrive for bus loading at 10:30am. Do not be late. Once the bus is loaded, it will leave without you if you are not there.

You may wish to bring games and movies for the bus. We will only have movies if someone brings them! Also, feel free to coordinate games, movies, etc on the SFBA ARML facebook page! https://www.facebook.com/groups/bayareaarml/ If you're not in the group, request to be added and I'll add you. :)

We have a team tradition of wearing our oldest ARML t-shirts on the bus. I will be wearing a shirt from 2008, and I'm excited to see your ARML shirts from past years.

If you have any questions about the bus, please ask! See you tomorrow!

Best,
Moor

ARML 2016 Itinerary

Dear ARML team,

This year's itinerary is now posted on Moor's website. If you have any questions, please contact us as soon as possible.

You will notice one new item in the "rules" section this year. Because our awards ceremony happens rather late in the day compared to the other sites, you may become aware of contest results (from friends at other sites, AoPS, etc.) before they are announced at awards. If you do, do not share this information with anyone. Don't spoil the surprise for your teammates.

Final ARML practice on Sunday at Stanford

Hi everyone,

Our final practice will be on Sunday, May 29, from 12:00pm to 3:30pm, in the basement of Building 380 at Stanford. Note that this is a longer practice than usual.

As always, you can find more information about practices at https://math.berkeley.edu/~moorxu/2016ARML/.

Since this is the final practice, it is especially important that everyone come on time to practice -- your team is depending on you to be there! If you really need to miss practice, make sure that you fill out the practice absence form on the website before practice.

Best,
Moor

t-shirt orders and bus times

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for voting on t-shirts this year. We're going with the unicorn design, and as always each team will have a different color shirt. If you are interested in purchasing extra shirts, you must purchase them online by midnight tomorrow night. You can go to http://mathleague.org/armlshirts.php to place your order. Remember that these are adult sizes. You will be issued one t-shirt corresponding to your team assignment and the size you indicated when you signed up for ARML, but if you think you may have given us an incorrect size (or not realized they were adult sizes rather than youth sizes), feel free to email us to clarify. The t-shirt order will go in on Tuesday, so no changes can be made after that time

Also, I wanted to inform you of the bus departure details. For those of you taking the bus, you need to be at the San Jose Diridon Caltrain station by 10:30am on Thursday, June 2. This station is right across the street from SAP Center (go Sharks!), and a map is available here. The bus will depart from there and stop for a meal along the way before arriving in Las Vegas in the evening.

For next week's practice, plan on an afternoon practice on Sunday unless you hear otherwise from Moor. We're trying to arrange this one in Santa Clara County but will let you know more details when we have them.

Our next practice will be on Sunday, May 15, from noon to 3pm, at Evans Hall in Berkeley. As always, you can find more information about practices at https://math.berkeley.edu/~moorxu/2016ARML/. Old practice materials are posted there.

Tim will be at this practice, and this would be a good time to submit your (notarized) permission forms.

Team assignments were announced at the previous practice and are also listed at the end of this email. Please note that positions on elite teams are subject to regular attendance at practices. If you need to miss a practice, make sure that you fill out the practice absence form on the website before practice, with a good reason. Keep in mind that not all reasons are good. :)

It's time to vote on shirt designs and colors! See the survey below. As usual, each team gets to pick their own color. (Coaches are all of the colors -- tie-dye!) The deadline to submit the shirt design is the end of the day on Monday. Survey link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/RB3HBQW

Excuse letter and last call for travel changes

Dear team,

We've prepared a letter that you can give to your teachers if you need it to be excused from school the days you're traveling to ARML. You can download it from Moor's practice site. Your teachers are welcome to contact us if they need any further information.

Lastly, Saturday will be the last day to make any changes to your travel plans (i.e. switching between bus and flights). After that, I will be finalizing our dorm arrangements, and thus we will probably not have dorm rooms available to accommodate changes. As always, send any last-minute changes to arml@mathleague.org.

Current ARML Roster - Double check for your name

Hi Everyone,

Please come to practice this Saturday! I changed my travel plans to be at this practice, and we will be announcing team assignments there. We will send an email with the teams after practice if you can't make it, but where's the fun in that? :) I assume you all know where to find practice details, but if you seriously haven't figured it out by now, send an email and we'll get you squared away.

In order to announce teams of course, we HAVE to know exactly who is going to ARML, so we are setting a firm deadline of Thursday to accept payments for the trip. After that, we can only add people to the team if someone else drops out. PLEASE check out the list below and make sure your name is there if you think you have paid to go to ARML. If your name does not appear on the list, we do not have a record of your payment for ARML, so if you think you did pay, let us know immediately! Coaches, Moor will be confirming with you separately whether you are going to ARML. While you're checking out the list, be sure to verify the spelling of your name, your gender, and what your transportation arrangements are. If any of this is incorrect, we need to know by Thursday or there could be problems getting you registered, getting you into the dorms, or getting you to ARML.

Speaking of getting to ARML, we would like to encourage a few more of you to consider flying to ARML on one of the approved flights mentioned earlier (send an email if you don't know where to find those details) in order to balance out the number of students flying versus taking the bus. So we are going to reopen the flight rebate option until Thursday night at midnight. Book your flights on one of the approved round trips and send us your confirmation by midnight Thursday, and you will get a $100 rebate after ARML is over.

ARML practice on Sunday

Hi everyone,

Our next practice will be Sunday, May 1, 2pm-5pm, in Evans Hall at UC Berkeley. Room assignments will be posted at the main entrances to the building. As always, you can find more information about practice at https://math.berkeley.edu/~moorxu/2016ARML/.

I understand that Berkeley is far away for a lot of you. Check out the Carpool Form if you want help arranging carpools. Also, if you need to miss practice, make sure that you fill out the Practice Absence Form before practice.

Tim will be present for the first hour of practice, and this would be a good time to submit your (notarized) permission forms.

Due to a variety of scheduling conflicts, we have a shortage of coaches available for this week's practice. If any parents are interested in helping out at practice, please get in touch with me. This especially if you're familiar with the structure of ARML (such as the relay round). We would really appreciate your help!

Best,
Moor

ARML roster and some reminders

Hi Everyone,

At the bottom of this email is a list of students who have paid for ARML at this point. If you plan to go to ARML and have not yet paid, please take care of that by May 1, as we will close registrations in early May once we have reached capacity. If you have sent a payment but don't show up on this list, please get in touch with us ASAP so we can correct our records.

I will be at practice this Sunday for the first hour or so if you would like to hand me a check or permission slip for ARML. If you plan to bring a check on Sunday, please email to let us know ahead of time if possible. Permission slips that are not handed to me must be mailed to the Florida PO Box on our website. Payments that are not handed to me should be made online in order to ensure you are confirmed for the trip by May 1. Moor will send out a separate email with practice details; I hope to see as many of you there as possible.

Remember, if you are planning to fly to ARML, it must be on one of the previously-announced approved flights, and to be eligible for a flight rebate you must (among other things) forward us your confirmation details by midnight on April 30. Next week I plan to send an email detailing what mode of transportation we understand everyone is using to get to ARML.

Also, please remember to send us your t-shirt designs by May the 4th (be with you). Guidelines were distributed in an earlier email; if you did not receive that email, you can find it at the email archive link on our website.

[2016 ARML] - Practice Update and ARML Local

Hi everyone,

Thanks to those of you who came to practice last weekend -- it was great seeing everyone there! Practice materials from practice have been posted at our practice website: https://math.berkeley.edu/~moorxu/2016ARML/. To access them, use username=sfba and password=arml.

Our next practice has been scheduled: Saturday, April 23, 1pm-5pm at Valley Christian High School. See the practice website for more details. This is also a longer practice, since we will be participating in ARML Local. This is an official competition written by ARML that is given out locally by ARML teams. This year, we are offering ARML Local jointly with A-Star, and you may receive information from them about ARML Local as well. Everyone will do ARML Local together.

I wanted to emphasize a few other things from the practice website:

ARML is a team activity, and as such, it is really important that everyone come to practice whenever possible -- the team depends on everybody's active participation. If you can't make it to practice on a particular day, fill out the Practice Absence Form on the website before that practice, with a good reason. Unexcused absences may negatively affect placement on elite teams.

I've heard that traveling to practices can be a challenge, so we've set up a Carpool Form on the website to assist you in setting up carpools. You can fill out that form to express interest in carpooling. The form responses are public, so you can view responses and contact each other to set up carpooling.

Again, all information about practices can be found at https://math.berkeley.edu/~moorxu/2016ARML/... check there if you have any questions! If you have a question that's not answered on the website, let me know and I'll be happy to help. :)

ARML update - flights, elite teams, and more

Hi Everyone,

Here are a few notes you should be aware of. Please read this entire email.

SAT CONFLICTS

We just received word from ARML about how to resolve conflicts for students who are signed up to take an SAT on the same date as ARML. We strongly encourage you to take your SAT on another date, but if you have already signed up for the SAT on June 4, it may still be possible to go to ARML. Contact us for more details.

PRACTICES

Our first practice will be this Sunday, April 17, at Valley Christian School in San Jose. Please see https://math.berkeley.edu/~moorxu/2016ARML/ for more details. Practice dates and locations will be updated on Moor's site as they are confirmed. If your school is able to host a practice, please contact us so we can follow up with you.

The following weekend we will take the ARML Local contest at practice, so watch for more details on that as well.

FLIGHTS

We are starting to coordinate transportation for ARML this year, and I'm ready to open up the first three flight options. Here they are:

SAN FRANCISCO
Southwest 1972, June 3
SFO-LAS, 5:35-7:00am
Southwest 1914, June 4
LAS-SFO, 7:30-9:00pm

OAKLAND
Southwest 1576, June 3
OAK-LAS, 5:20-6:45am
Southwest 267, June 4
LAS-OAK, 7:15-8:40pm

SACRAMENTO
Southwest 767, June 2 (note that this is Thursday night)
SMF-LAS, 9:35-10:50pm
Southwest 1971, June 4
LAS-SMF, 6:40-9:30pm

For any student who purchases one of these EXACT round trips and sends us confirmation at arml@mathleague.org by midnight on April 30, we will refund $100 of your ARML fee because we will likely be able to sell your seat on the bus to someone else. Right now the first round trip is $174, the second is $194, and the third is $290, but I certainly expect the fares to go up as people start buying tickets. Please note that this $100 refund will not necessarily apply to other flights we open up or to purchases made after April 30; if we approve new flights or extend the deadline for claiming refunds I will post details, but DO NOT ask about other flights for now. Remember, NO student goes to ARML unless it is on the bus or one of the flights we approve, as we need adult supervision at all times on the trip.

For parents interested in going to Las Vegas, you may feel free to book any flight you choose and to make your own arrangements for accommodations in Las Vegas. If you are traveling independently to Las Vegas, we'd still like to know your transportation details so we can coordinate various aspects of the trip with you (for instance, we may be able to assist you with ground transportation, or we may ask you to volunteer to chaperone one of the flights if you are taking one of the approved flights). Any parents interested in riding the bus or staying in the dorms on campus should contact us for more details regarding cost and availability.

T-SHIRTS

We need a team t-shirt for ARML -- and you have a chance to design it! Any student who wishes to submit a design is very welcome to do so; we will vote on the designs in in mid-May.

The deadline for submissions is Monday, May 4th. Voting will begin on Tuesday May 5th and run for one week. Once the voting begins, we will not be able to add late submissions.

Here are the ground rules -- please read them carefully, even the ones at the end!

Include the words "SFBA" or "San Francisco Bay Area" or both
Include the words "NorCal" or "Northern California" or both
Include the words "ARML" or "American Regions Mathematics League" or both
Include at least the year (2016). You *could* also include the specific days (May 29 - 30), and/or "UNLV" or "Las Vegas, Nevada" or "University of Nevada, Las Vegas" or some variant of this.
Do NOT include anything that might be considered offensive to other students, parents, teachers, or, well, anyone. This has never been a problem in the past, but we do explicitly reserve the right to censor submissions that fail to meet this criterion.
Do NOT use copyrighted material, unless you own the copyright!
Also, please be realistic about what your design will look like on a t-shirt

Use a maximum of 4 colors (and different shades count as different colors! This will be silk-screened, so subtle blending and mixing of these 4 colors is out; On the other hand, half-tones are ok.) Front and back count separately -- that is, you could have 2 colors on each side, or 3 on one side and 1 on the other, or simply have JUST front artwork with 4 colors. You don't need to count the background color of the shirt

It would be helpful if you can produce your design in a high-resolution version (preferably TIFF, PSD, or EPS formats, the sort of thing you can do with Photoshop, GIMP, or Paint.NET, etc.) for the printers. Low-resolution designs do NOT look good on t-shirts! If you don't have the tools to do this, our t-shirt printing company will have their art staff redo your design in a higher-resolution format if you can't, but there's no guarantee it will be exactly the same.

Email us (arml@mathleague.org) your files, the names of those who worked on the design, and a name for the design for the voting.

ELITE TEAM SELECTION

The coaching staff has identified our first 15 elite team members this year. We plan to select two elite teams this year, so each of these students is guaranteed a spot on either the A1 or A2 team. This list contains only students who signed up and paid for ARML on the priority timeline we established, but we still have 15 more spots to assign, so it's not too late to qualify for an elite team if you make sure your payment is in, show up to practice, and impress us. :) Remember, we will continue to accept payments until all our teams are filled, so if you haven't submitted payment yet and plan to go to ARML, please make sure to do that ASAP. Here are our first 15 elite team members:
  • Kai-Siang Ang
  • Anton Cao
  • Kevin Chang
  • Cynthia Chen
  • Matthew Hase-Liu
  • David Hu
  • Arav Karighattam
  • Sujay Kazi
  • Austin Lei
  • Jeffery Li
  • Wentinn Liao
  • Andrew Lin
  • Edwin Peng
  • Aadeesh Shastry
  • Stanley Wang
